In October our speaker David Menzies gave an interesting illustrated talk about his visits, over a number of years, to the Chelsea Flower Show. Formerly a specialist orchid grower at Kew Botanical Gardens, and later assistant curator at Glasgow Botanical Gardens, David spoke about the enormous effort involved in staging the show in the grounds of The Royal Hospital, Chelsea. In roughly a three week period the show gardens are constructed and the huge Great Pavilion erected. This pavilion covers almost three acres and replaced the 1951 canvas marquee in 2000. We enjoyed seeing slides of impressive exhibits, also visiting celebrities, and hearing about some of the history and current trends as the show has evolved.
Our next meeting will take place in Enterprise House on Thursday, November 21, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm when the speaker will be Frazier Henderson. Frazer is an active member of a number of horticultural societies and has travelled extensively in pursuit of his interest in island flora. He is going to talk about plant species on Socrota, an island off Yemen in the Indian Ocean.
Potential new members are welcome to turn up on the night.
